Steigende Ateliermieten auf dem Kreativquartier, besonders im kollaborativen Haus2, waren der Impuls für das Projekt Reclaim Space. Die zentrale Frage: Wie können wir als Künstler*innen gemeinsam unsere Produktionsräume schützen, wenn Kunst selbst zum Motor der Aufwertung wird? Im Mai 2025 initiierte der Künstler Fabian Gatermann einen radikalen Gestaltungsprozess: 75 Graffiti-Artists – meist aus der illegalen Szene – wurden eingeladen, die Fassade des Hauses vorwiegend mit Tags und Signaturen gemeinsam zu transformieren. Das Experiment war offen, kollaborativ und bewusst kontrovers angelegt.
Die fertige Fassade wurde durch einen fiktiven Mitarbeiter der Stadt eröffnet: Der Residenztheaterschauspieler Lucas Rüppel als Thomas Simon Pereira persiflierte in einer Rede (geschrieben von Tuncay Acar / Kompetenzteam Vielheit) die Auswüchse der neoliberalen Kulturpolitik der Stadt München. Die Reaktionen auf das neue Erscheinungsbild des Hauses sind gespalten: Von Lobeshymnen und Presseartikeln hin zu Beleidigungen. Wird Haus2 nun zum Instagram-Hotspot für Touristen und zum Aushängeschild für Münchens Kreativität oder zum Schandfleck der Stadt? Die Fassade und ihre Geschichten funktionieren multidimensional auf unterschiedlichen Ebenen. Will die Stadt München bei Rekordeinnahmen von 9,5 Mrd. Euro eigenst.ndige Produktionräume für Kunst und Kultur wirklich erhalten?
„Deswegen haben wir die erlesensten Graffitikünstler:innen der Republik eingeladen,
um diese symbolträchtige Fassade mit ihren Signaturen zu gestalten. Sie haben heute das Glück, der Eröffnung eines Denkmals der Urbanen Kultur beizuwohnen. Denkmal auch deshalb, weil wir tatsächlich bereits den Denkmalschutz für dieses Objekt in der Pipeline haben.“

Rising studio rents in the Kreativquartier, especially in the collaborative Haus2, were the impetus for the Reclaim Space project. The central question: How can we as artists protect our production spaces when art itself becomes part of and a driver of gentrification? In May 2025, artist Fabian Gatermann initiated a radical design process: 75 graffiti artists—mostly from the illegal scene—were invited to transform the facade of the building together, primarily with tags. The experiment was open, collaborative, and deliberately controversial.The finished façade was unveiled by a fictional city employee: Residenztheater actor Lucas Rüppel, as Thomas Simon Pereira, satirized the excesses of the city of Munich‘s neoliberal cultural policy in a speech (written by Tuncay Acar / Kompetenzteam Vielheit). Reactions to the building‘s new appearance are divided: from praise and press articles to insults. Will Haus2 now become an Instagram hotspot for tourists and a flagship for Munich‘s creativity, or an eyesore for the city? The facade and its narratives work multidimensionally on different levels. With record revenues of 9.5 billion euros, does the wealthy city of Munich really want to maintain independent production spaces for art and culture?
